National Academics Panel Study (Nacaps) 2018

Nacaps, the National Academics Panel Study, is a new longitudinal study of doctoral candidates and doctorate holders in Germany funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). The project aims at providing nationwide cross-sectional and lo... morengitudinal data on doctoral candidates and doctorate holders in Germany regarding their study conditions as well as their career trajectories within and outside of academia. The Nacaps study series apply a panel design to multiple cohorts. Nacaps 2018 is the first cohort in this series of studies. In 2019, all doctoral candidates registered at 53 higher education institutions entitled to award PhDs/doctorates in Germany as off 01.12.2018 were invited to a first survey. Further panel waves follow at yearly intervals. Topics of the survey are e.g. the kind and structure of doctoral studies, motives for conducting doctoral studies, the mentoring situation, working and employment conditions, plans for career paths after the doctorate, international mobility, as well as individual characteristics of respondents. By covering these topics and by considering important indicators on young scholars, the Nacaps data provide important knowledge for national reporting (e.g. the federal report on young academics called “Bundesbericht wissenschaftlicher Nachwuchs”), for local steering, as well as for numerous further stakeholders. Moreover, the data offer an opportunity to investigate scientific research questions in the field of academic careers. less

DZHW Scientists Survey 2023

The DZHW Scientists Survey 2023 is an online survey of full-time academic and artistic staff at German universities and equivalent institutions of higher education with the right to award doctorates. It is repeated at regular intervals as a trend study to ... moreexplore the working and research conditions at German universities and equivalent institutions of higher education. The DZHW Scientists Survey 2023 was conducted from January to March 2023. The respondents therefore take a retrospective look at their working and research conditions during the Covid-19 pandemic and their current post-pandemic situation. The previous Scientists Surveys took place in 2010, 2016 and 2019/2020. The DZHW Scientists Survey is designed as a multi-topic survey. Each survey consists of a core questionnaire with central questions, many of which have already been asked in one or more previous Scientists Surveys, as well as advanced modules with questions on focus topics. The core questionnaire contains the following thematic blocks: “Key data on scientific biography”, “Research and working conditions”, “Research funding”, “Publication behavior and knowledge transfer”, “Science policy topics and attitudes” and “Demography”. Within these thematic blocks, the topics “Continuing education courses in higher education didactics”, “Considerations on leaving academia” and “Research during the Corona pandemic” were included in the DZHW Scientists Survey 2023 for the first time. The focus topics in the advanced modules of the DZHW Scientists Survey 2023 were “Research Information/Digital Infrastructures/Informational Self-Determination”, “Digital Scholarly Communication”, “Science Mobility”, “Research Funding”, “Trust within Science”, “Tenure Track and Researcher Independence” as well as “Peer Review and Lotteries in Research Funding”. less

DZHW Scientists Survey 2019

The DZHW Scientists Survey 2019 is an online survey of full-time academic and artistic staff at German universities, colleges of education, theology, art and music, and medical schools. It is repeated at regular intervals as a trend study to explore the wo... morerking and research conditions at German universities and equivalent institutions of higher education. The first two surveys took place in 2010 and 2016. The 2019 Scientists Survey was conducted from November 2019 to February 2020. Accordingly, the COVID19 pandemic from March 2020 onwards did not yet have impact on the survey of scientists, who were consequently able to refer to their regular daily research routine. The DZHW science survey is designed as a multi-topic survey. Each survey contains a core instrument (a constant survey programme over several waves) with central questions on working and research conditions as well as modules with more in-depth questions on current research policy topics and research priorities. The core instrument is completed by priority topics for which the instruments are developed in cooperation with research groups within and outside the DZHW. The focus topics of the 2019 science survey were: open data, research information, authorship, knowledge transfer and subject cultures. less

The Student Survey in Germany (2021)

"The Student Survey in Germany" (2021) is a newly designed study that integrates three previously separate student surveys (Beuße et al., 2022): the Social Survey (Middendorff et al., 2017; Middendorff & Wallis, 2023), the Student Survey (Multrus et al... more., 2017; Multrus, 2021) and the survey "best - Studying with impairments" (Poskowsky et al., 2018; Unger et al., 2012). The study is designed as a cross-sectional survey with a long-term character. The new, integrated student survey thus continues the long tradition of the Social Survey and the Student Survey as important cross-sectional long-term observation studies for describing and analysing higher education and the student population in Germany, as well as the significantly shorter tradition of the previous "best studies". The survey covered a variety of topics relating to the study situation and the different life situations of students in Germany. The content of the programme is very diverse, as the thematic focuses of the previously separate surveys were integrated. In the tradition of the Social Survey, the economic and social situation of students is analysed (Middendorff, 2022). This focus is supplemented by topics from the student survey (Multrus et al., 2017). In addition, for the first time the new study design enables comparisons between students with and without health impairments that make studying difficult (Steinkühler et al., 2023). By combining survey content in this way, cross-connections between different subject areas can be established. This data package contains the survey data from the summer semester 2021. less

The study analyses how the formal context as well as the learning and development conditions that PhD graduates experienced during ... moretheir doctorate studies influence the transition into employment and the further development of their professional career, both within as well as outside academia. The basic population comprises all persons who obtained a doctorate degree from a higher education institution with the right to award doctorates in Germany in the examination year of 2014. The panel is designed as a census in order to generate a sufficiently high number of cases. Apart from basic data for the education report, the data set includes detailed information on the learning and development conditions during the doctorate studies as well as the career path of PhD holders after graduation. The data set also includes a range of personality traits (Big Five, self-efficacy, internal/external locus of control) together with background information on sociographic and educational biography. less

DZHW Graduate Panel 2009

The DZHW Graduate Panel 2009 is part of the DZHW Graduate Survey Series, which compiles information on study, career entry, career development and further qualifications of higher education graduates using standardised surveys. The first Graduate Panel was... more created in 1989. Since then, every fourth graduate year (cohort) has been surveyed. For each graduate cohort, a series of survey waves are carried out, with each wave occurring at differing time intervals following the completion of degree. The DZHW Graduate Panel 2009 comprises the sixth graduate cohort of the survey series. Similar to the 2005 cohort, the study phase of the 2009 cohort is defined by the transformation of higher education through the Bologna Process as well as the changed labour market conditions due to the economic and financial crisis in 2008. In contrast to preceding graduate cohorts, a large number of Bachelor graduates were surveyed in addition to graduates of traditional courses of study. As a methodical innovation, the second survey wave for the 2009 cohort was conducted online for the first time. In addition to the main survey, the second survey wave includes two in-depth surveys on the topics „doctorate“ and „regional mobility“. The third wave of the survey, which was also conducted online, also consists of a main survey and two in-depth surveys on the topics of "mobility/job content" and "reconciling work and family life," although only the data from the main survey has been made available for secondary use to date. less

The DZHW Graduate Panel 2013 is part of the DZHW Graduate Study Series, which uses standardised surveys to gather information on the studies, career entry, career development and further qualification of university graduates. The first Graduate Panel was c... moreonducted in 1989, since then every fourth graduate cohort has been surveyed. For each cohort of graduates, several waves of interviews are conducted, each wave taking place at different intervals from the time of graduation. The 2013 Graduate Panel is the seventh cohort of graduates in the study series. Even more than the graduate cohorts of 2005 and 2009, the study phase of the 2013 cohort is characterised by the changes in higher education within the framework of the Bologna Process and changes with regard to the comparability of degrees and the resulting changes in mobility. The career entry phase of the 2013 graduate cohort is characterised by an upswing after a severe depression as a result of the economic and financial crisis in 2008. In contrast to previous cohorts, persons with traditional degrees (Diplom or Magister) are no longer part of the sample in the 2013 cohort. (Exceptions exist for certain degree programmes in individual federal states which continue to award a Diplom degree). less

The DZHW Scientists Survey 2016 is an online survey for full-time academic and artistic personnel at German universities, teacher training colleges, theological colleges, art and music colleges as well as medical schools. It is a follow-up to the Scientists Survey 2010 which was carried out by the Institute for Research Information and Quality Assurance (iFQ). The iFQ merged with the DZHW in January 2016. Both the current and the last survey focus mainly on the research conditions of academics at German universities in regard to the changes of the German science system over the last 20 years. The survey contains questions on opinions on science politics, employment and career prospects of young academics, the peer review system, merit-based resource allocation, the acquisition of external funds and working time budgets. less
