The DZHW Graduate Panel 2005 is part of the DZHW Graduate Survey Series, which compiles information on study, career entry, career development and further qualifications of higher education graduates using standardised surveys. The first Graduate Panel was... more created in 1989. Since then, every fourth graduate year (cohort) has been surveyed. For each graduate cohort, a series of survey waves are carried out, with each wave occurring at differing time intervals following the completion of degree. The DZHW Graduate Panel 2005 comprises the fifth graduate cohort of the survey series. In contrast to preceding graduate cohorts, the study phase of the 2005 cohort is defined by the transformation of higher education through the Bologna Process. With respect to this academic structural reform, a significant number of Bachelor graduates were surveyed for the first time in addition to graduates of traditional courses of study. Only graduates of subjects with a large number of graduates were considered. In addition to the changing academic environment, the graduate cohort 2005 also faced different labour market conditions than previous cohorts, whereby the beginning of the economic and financial crisis in 2008 marks their career entry. less

Key components of the study include access to higher education, structural aspects of the course and progress of studies, the economic and social situation (financing of studies, living expenses, employment, housing conditions) as well as topics in the field of activity of the German National Association for Student Affairs and socio-demographic characteristics. Over the course of the structural reform of the Bologna Process, the proportion of students of “new” courses of study in the sample of the 20th Social Survey has further increased compared to the sample of the 19th Social Survey. The implementation of “G8” in several federal states between 2009 and 2012, which reduced the duration until high school graduation from nine to eight school years, as well as the nationwide suspension of compulsory military service in 2011 allowed for matriculation at a lower age. less

The Social Survey is a cross-section... moreal study which is usually carried out every three years. Key components of the study include access to higher education, structural aspects of the course and progress of studies, the economic and social situation (financing of studies, living expenses, employment, housing conditions) as well as topics in the field of activity of the German National Association for Student Affairs and socio-demographic characteristics.  Due to the structural reform of the Bologna Process being well-advanced when the study was conducted, it comprises a significant proportion of students of the “new” courses of study. As another characteristic of the 19th Social Survey, 60 percent of the surveyed students were studying at a higher education institution charging general tuition fees. less

National Academics Panel Study (Nacaps) 2018

Nacaps, the National Academics Panel Study, is a new longitudinal study of doctoral candidates and doctorate holders in Germany funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). The project aims at providing nationwide cross-sectional and lo... morengitudinal data on doctoral students and doctorate holders in Germany regarding their study conditions as well as their career trajectories within and outside of academia. The Nacaps study series apply a panel design to multiple cohorts. In 2019, all doctoral students registered at 53 doctorate-granting higher education institutions as off 01.12.2018 were invited to a first survey. Further panel waves follow at yearly intervals. Topics of the survey are e.g. the kind and structure of doctoral studies, motives for conducting doctoral studies, the mentoring situation, working and employment conditions, plans for career paths after the doctorate, international mobility, as well as individual characteristics of respondents. By covering these topics and by considering important indicators on young scholars, the Nacaps data provide important knowledge for national reporting (e.g. the federal report on young academics called “Bundesbericht wissenschaftlicher Nachwuchs”), for local steering, as well as for numerous further stakeholders. Moreover, the data offer an opportunity to investigate scientific research questions in the field of academic careers. less

Qualitative sub-study of the "VORAUS" project

The project "VORAUS: Further developing established quality assurance formats: Which VORreservations and consensuses does a partially randomised SELECTION of research projects encounter in the scientific field?" was funded by the BMBF from April 2019 to Ma... morerch 2022. The study investigated reservations and consensus in the scientific field regarding partial randomisation. On this basis, it was clarified what is currently considered appropriate in science. Prior to a quantitative survey on the topic, the data from which is also available as a data package (DOI: https://doi.org/10.21249/DZHW:vorausquanti:1.0.0), problem-centred interviews were conducted with scientists from different status groups in the qualitative sub-study. In a narrative part of the interviews, the interviewees were asked about their path into research. Questions were asked about their experiences with research funding, their attitudes towards ensuring scientific quality in research funding and the randomised selection of research proposals. The present data package comprises a total of 18 transcripts of six interviews each with professors, post-docs and doctoral students. less

The data are based on random samples at 16 universities and ten universities of applied sciences in West Germany and comprise 558 items (plus additionally created variables). less

Causes of dropout in master's programs (StuMa)

The study "StuMa" deals with the causes of dropping out of a master's program and the further professional development after dropping out of a master's program. While there are some data available for undergraduate programs that allow an analysis of possib... morele causes of dropout, there is no suitable database for master's programs. Due to the comparatively low dropout rates in master's programs, dropout in this phase of studies has not yet been perceived as a research topic in higher education research. StuMa is the first nationwide survey that is aimed exclusively at Master's students and generates a database to determine the study situation and the reasons for dropping out of Master's studies, as well as to analyze the professional fate of those who have dropped out. To realize the study, an online survey was conducted with de-registered students (with and without a degree) from master's programs at German state universities in the winter semester 2018/19 and the summer semester 2019. less
