The 2017 graduate survey is the first collaborative project in the context of the DZHW graduate study series. The joint partners DZHW, INCHER, and ISTAT aim to take into account the interests of different user groups as comprehensively as possible. To this end, a jointly coordinated and redesigned instrument is to make it possible to take into account questions of both national education monitoring and higher education management and research (Fabian, Flöther & Reifenberg, 2021). Thematically, the 2017 graduate survey focuses on the transition to the labor market (or to further academic qualifications) and an initial labor market placement. The collection of nationally representative data on the 2017 graduating class is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). less

The study analyses how the formal context as well as the learning and development conditions that PhD graduates experienced during ... moretheir doctorate studies influence the transition into employment and the further development of their professional career, both within as well as outside academia. The basic population comprises all persons who obtained a doctorate degree from a higher education institution with the right to award doctorates in Germany in the examination year of 2014. The panel is designed as a census in order to generate a sufficiently high number of cases. Apart from basic data for the education report, the data set includes detailed information on the learning and development conditions during the doctorate studies as well as the career path of PhD holders after graduation. The data set also includes a range of personality traits (Big Five, self-efficacy, internal/external locus of control) together with background information on sociographic and educational biography. less

The first Graduate Panel was... more created in 1989. Since then, every fourth graduate year (cohort) has been surveyed. For each graduate cohort, a series of survey waves are carried out, with each wave occurring at differing time intervals following the completion of degree. The DZHW Graduate Panel 2009 comprises the sixth graduate cohort of the survey series. Similar to the 2005 cohort, the study phase of the 2009 cohort is defined by the transformation of higher education through the Bologna Process as well as the changed labour market conditions due to the economic and financial crisis in 2008. In contrast to preceding graduate cohorts, a large number of Bachelor graduates were surveyed in addition to graduates of traditional courses of study. As a methodical innovation, the second survey wave for the 2009 cohort was conducted online for the first time. In addition to the main survey, the second survey wave includes two in-depth surveys on the topics „doctorate“ and „regional mobility“. The third wave of the survey, which was also conducted online, also consists of a main survey and two in-depth surveys on the topics of "mobility/job content" and "reconciling work and family life," although only the data from the main survey has been made available for secondary use to date. less

The first Graduate Panel was c... moreonducted in 1989, since then every fourth graduate cohort has been surveyed. For each cohort of graduates, several waves of interviews are conducted, each wave taking place at different intervals from the time of graduation. The 2013 Graduate Panel is the seventh cohort of graduates in the study series. Even more than the graduate cohorts of 2005 and 2009, the study phase of the 2013 cohort is characterised by the changes in higher education within the framework of the Bologna Process and changes with regard to the comparability of degrees and the resulting changes in mobility. The career entry phase of the 2013 graduate cohort is characterised by an upswing after a severe depression as a result of the economic and financial crisis in 2008. In contrast to previous cohorts, persons with traditional degrees (Diplom or Magister) are no longer part of the sample in the 2013 cohort. (Exceptions exist for certain degree programmes in individual federal states which continue to award a Diplom degree). less

The DZHW Graduate Panel 2005 comprises the fifth graduate cohort of the survey series. In contrast to preceding graduate cohorts, the study phase of the 2005 cohort is defined by the transformation of higher education through the Bologna Process. With respect to this academic structural reform, a significant number of Bachelor graduates were surveyed for the first time in addition to graduates of traditional courses of study. Only graduates of subjects with a large number of graduates were considered. In addition to the changing academic environment, the graduate cohort 2005 also faced different labour market conditions than previous cohorts, whereby the beginning of the economic and financial crisis in 2008 marks their career entry. less

Key components of the study include access to higher education, structural aspects of the course and progress of studies, the economic and social situation (financing of studies, living expenses, employment, housing conditions) as well as topics in the field of activity of the German National Association for Student Affairs and socio-demographic characteristics. Over the course of the structural reform of the Bologna Process, the proportion of students of “new” courses of study in the sample of the 20th Social Survey has further increased compared to the sample of the 19th Social Survey. The implementation of “G8” in several federal states between 2009 and 2012, which reduced the duration until high school graduation from nine to eight school years, as well as the nationwide suspension of compulsory military service in 2011 allowed for matriculation at a lower age. less

Key components of the study include access to higher education, structural aspects of the course and progress of studies, the economic and social situation (financing of studies, living expenses, employment, housing conditions) as well as topics in the field of activity of the German National Association for Student Affairs and socio-demographic characteristics.  Due to the structural reform of the Bologna Process being well-advanced when the study was conducted, it comprises a significant proportion of students of the “new” courses of study. As another characteristic of the 19th Social Survey, 60 percent of the surveyed students were studying at a higher education institution charging general tuition fees. less

The data are based on random samples at 16 universities and ten universities of applied sciences in West Germany and comprise 558 items (plus additionally created variables). less

Causes of dropout in master's programs (StuMa)

The study "StuMa" deals with the causes of dropping out of a master's program and the further professional development after dropping out of a master's program. While there are some data available for undergraduate programs that allow an analysis of possib... morele causes of dropout, there is no suitable database for master's programs. Due to the comparatively low dropout rates in master's programs, dropout in this phase of studies has not yet been perceived as a research topic in higher education research. StuMa is the first nationwide survey that is aimed exclusively at Master's students and generates a database to determine the study situation and the reasons for dropping out of Master's studies, as well as to analyze the professional fate of those who have dropped out. To realize the study, an online survey was conducted with de-registered students (with and without a degree) from master's programs at German state universities in the winter semester 2018/19 and the summer semester 2019. less
