National Academics Panel Study (Nacaps) 2020

The project aims at providing nationwide cross-sectional... more and longitudinal data on doctoral candidates and doctorate holders in Germany regarding their study conditions as well as their career trajectories within and outside of academia. The Nacaps study series apply a panel design to multiple cohorts. Nacaps 2020 is the second cohort in this series of studies. In 2021, all doctoral candidates who had been registered at 65 higher education institutions entitled to award PhDs/doctorates in Germany between December 2, 2018, and December 1, 2020 were invited to a first online survey. Further panel waves follow at yearly intervals. Topics of the survey are e.g. the kind and structure of doctoral studies, motives for conducting doctoral studies, the mentoring situation, working and employment conditions, plans for career paths after the doctorate, international mobility, as well as individual characteristics of respondents. By covering these topics and by considering important indicators on young scholars, the Nacaps data provide important knowledge for national reporting (e.g. the federal report on young academics called “Bundesbericht Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler in einer frühen Karrierephase”), for local steering, as well as for numerous further stakeholders. Moreover, the data offer an opportunity to investigate scientific research questions in the field of academic careers. less

The project examined the discourses, drivers, organizational forms, and impacts of the digitalization of scholarly communication within the context of a changing social, economic, and political environment in science. In seven work packages, it addressed, among other things, various forms of self-presentation and self-description by researchers through the establishment of scholarly communication media. Additionally, it considered new actors and infrastructures, as well as their approaches to collecting and disseminating data on digital science communication. The data package provided here is based on expert interviews conducted as part of the subproject Digital Visibilities in Appointment Procedures (DigiVisib). This subproject aimed to explore how universities take digital visibilities into account in decision-making processes of appointment procedures. The data package includes 13 interviews with professors who are experienced members of appointment committees. In addition, it contains the interview guideline used for data collection, the transcription guideline, the invitation letter used for field access and the informed consent. less

The panel 2018 is the 21st cohort of the survey series of which the data of the first survey wave will be published first. One of the main focal points is the topic of diversity, with a particular focus on migration background. The number of participating countries increased from 8 to 17, covering more than half of the countries of the European Economic Area. EUROGRADUATE aims at ... morelaying the ground for a sustainable European graduate survey. This is an exciting initiative to map the impact that experiences of European graduates during their time as students have had on their professional lives and their lives as European citizens. The project explores how graduates studied, whether they are satisfied with their studies, which competencies they achieve, whether they travelled abroad, and what they did after graduation. The results will be used to compare the different higher education systems in Europe and identify ways in which they can better prepare young people for the world of work and their role in society. The results of the study will help universities to improve their study programmes and teaching methods, support future students in their study decisions and serve as a source of information for policy makers. At European level, this data will help to analyse progress in the realisation of the European Education Area. EUROGRADUATE 2022 was led by an international consortium of four partner organisations: German Centre for Higher Education Research and Science Studies (DZHW, Germany, coordination), Institute for Advanced Studies (IHS, Austria), Research Centre for Education and the Labour Market at the University of Maastricht (ROA, The Netherlands), and cApStAn linguistic quality control (Belgium). National research teams implemented the EUROGRADUATE survey 2022 in the participating countries. What is their employment and financial situation like? And to what extent is it possible to study successfully under the given circumstances? These and many other questions are the guiding principles of this study. In order to gain a realistic picture of the situation of students in Germany, around 28,600 students from 23 nationally selected state universities of different sizes, subject structures and regional locations are surveyed. The results of the survey are relevant to numerous measures in the fields of higher education, education and social policy and should enable research to examine various issues arising in the course of the corona pandemic. The study "Studying in Corona Times" is being carried out jointly with the University of Konstanz's Higher Education Research Working Group and the German National Association for Student Affairs. The basic population comprises all persons who obtained a doctorate degree from a higher education institution with the right to award doctorates in Germany in the examination year of 2014. The panel is designed as a census in order to generate a sufficiently high number of cases. Apart from basic data for the education report, the data set includes detailed information on the learning and development conditions during the doctorate studies as well as the career path of PhD holders after graduation. The data set also includes a range of personality traits (Big Five, self-efficacy, internal/external locus of control) together with background information on sociographic and educational biography. less

Development and dissemination of research data management at Universities of Applied Sciences (EVER_FDM)

The sample included all Universities of Applied Sciences (UAS) in Germany (full coverage surve... morey) and the target groups were professors and research assistants at these institutions. Initially, one person from the presidential board/rectorate as well as one person responsible for research data management (RDM) at each UAS was identified and contacted by e-mail. These persons were asked to forward the questionnaire link to the research-conducting staff at their university. This way, 2,456 people from 109 UAS were recruited to participate in the survey. A pretest ensured the quality of the questionnaire. The preparation and analysis of the data was done syntax-based using Stata. less

The dataset contains a wide range of psychological, occupational, and demographic variables from individuals working in academic environments. It includes information on psychometric scales, characteristics of the working environment, and traits of leadership personnel. Collected data includes measures of work engagement, burnout, resilience, stress and anxiety, overall wellbeing, job predictability, role clarity, perceptions of workplace safety policies, job insecurity, job control, interpersonal conflict, work-family conflict, sense of community, illegitimate tasks, work-related stress, as well as emotional and instrumental support. Leadership aspects such as leader demands, lack of care, supervisor integrity, and overall job satisfaction were also assessed. Furthermore, several characteristics of the working environment were surveyed, including the country of the main workplace, contract duration, overtime hours, time allocation for teaching, research, fundraising, mentoring, and administrative tasks, number of research outputs, opportunities for personal development, intentions to leave academia, experiences or perceptions of harassment, and frequency of meetings with supervisors. less

The DZHW Scientists Survey 2023 was conducted from January to March 2023. The respondents therefore take a retrospective look at their working and research conditions during the Covid-19 pandemic and their current post-pandemic situation. The previous Scientists Surveys took place in 2010, 2016 and 2019/2020. The DZHW Scientists Survey is designed as a multi-topic survey. Each survey consists of a core questionnaire with central questions, many of which have already been asked in one or more previous Scientists Surveys, as well as advanced modules with questions on focus topics. The core questionnaire contains the following thematic blocks: “Key data on scientific biography”, “Research and working conditions”, “Research funding”, “Publication behavior and knowledge transfer”, “Science policy topics and attitudes” and “Demography”. Within these thematic blocks, the topics “Continuing education courses in higher education didactics”, “Considerations on leaving academia” and “Research during the Corona pandemic” were included in the DZHW Scientists Survey 2023 for the first time. The aim of t... morehe joint project was to empirically reconstruct the change in higher education triggered by the switch to online teaching during the Covid 19 pandemic at both an individual and organisational level. The data package made available for re-use is based on the qualitative problem-centered interviews conducted as part of sub-project 3 ‘examining teaching’ at Paderborn University with professors who have developed and implemented innovative ideas in their teaching through interaction with digital technologies. The interviews were conducted between March and September 2023 and focused on the description of teaching concepts and planned future adjustments, the motivation for teaching commitment and any role models, questions about organisational support in the implementation of teaching concepts and ideas as well as challenges and solution strategies, the understanding of ‘good teaching’ and related changes in the context of the digitalisation of university teaching. Additionaly, the extent to which changes in society as a whole have an influence on the design of teaching and which changes to improve teaching should (or should not) be made in the coming years (at their university) from the interviewees' point of view were also discussed. The term “university management” is broadly construed to include both the executive and middle levels. The data contains the results of a nationwide online survey of 1,432 managers of public universities from the fields of study and teaching, research, and transfer in Germany. The survey was conducted in autumn 2023. Among other things, the survey asked how relevant research findings from higher education and science studies are for university management activities and which transfer channels are particularly relevant. Three central transfer channels were covered: publications, conference input, and social media, with a total of ten analysed sub-channels. The results are complemented with questions pertaining to relevant research topics, cooperations with the field of higher education and research studies, and recommendations for improvement. less

Data from the three substudies (2x qualitative, 1x quantitative) were published in separate data packages. The present data package contains the data from the quantitative sub-study. Data were collected by means of questionnaires at selected preparatory colleges and universities in Germany. The study participants were invited to take part in two repeat surveys in online mode. The analysis focussed on the subjects of sociology/social sciences (universities and universities of applied sciences), mechanical engineering (universities and universities of applied sciences), physics (universities) and medicine (universities) in order to cover subject-specific differences (with regard to tasks, work processes, professorship equipment, disciplinary performance standards, etc.). A total of 76 guideline-based expert interviews were conducted with university management, deans, appointment committee chairs and equal opportunities officers from selected universities, 30 of which were prepared for the data package. The project ana... morelysed (procedural) quality assurance in appointment procedures for professors at German (state) universities through officers for appointment procedures. Officers for appointment procedures are defined as persons who are responsible for the procedural quality assurance of appointment procedures for professors and – depending on the implementation of their position – may also perform other tasks to support the decision-making process in appointment matters. The data package made available for secondary use is based on qualitative expert interviews conducted with officers for appointment procedures, chairs of appointment committees and members of university leadership. The interviews, which were conducted between November 2020 and November 2021, focus on the quality assurance of appointment procedures for professors at German universities. In addition to the establishment and implementation of the types of professorial and non-professorial officers for appointment procedures to assure the quality of the procedures, the underlying understanding of quality of the respective actors and the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on the running of the procedures were also discussed. Besides 10 interviews with officers for appointment procedures, 7 interviews with chairs of appointment committees and 7 interviews with members of university leaderships, the data package includes the interview guidelines, as well as the transcription guide, the cover letters used for field access, the data protection information and the declaration of consent to data protection. less

The project Determinants and Effects of Collaboration in homogeneous and heterogeneous Research Clusters (DEKiF) focuses on the potential of university and entrepreneurial collaboration in the form of linked resources, personalities, competencies, and exch... moreanged experiences as well as perspectives. Apart from these positive effects, the mixed methods study further highlights the increasing challenges that collaborating companies and universities have to face. The explorative case study of homogenous and heterogenous research cooperation investigated if the theoretical and previously elicted problems, solutions, and conditions are differentiated sufficiently or if other parameters have to be considered (case study 1). The advanced case study of heterogenous research clusters investigated cooperation between universities and companies in expert interviews as well as in focus group discussions (case study 2). Research clusters with large-scale companies and small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) were included. Apart from that, different sizes or degrees of network complexity were considered in choosing research clusters. The aim was to examine the specific structure of the cooperation problems in applied research clusters and the experience with solutions, especially in regard to the different phases of cooperation, more precisely. Additionally, the different expectations of the interviewees regarding the performance was examined, for example with regard to publications, patents, and the qualification of the scientific offspring. less

The new, integrated student survey thus continues the long tradition of the Social Survey and the Student Survey as important cross-sectional long-term observation studies for describing and analysing higher education and the student population in Germany, as well as the significantly shorter tradition of the previous "best studies". The survey covered a variety of topics relating to the study situation and the different life situations of students in Germany. The content of the programme is very diverse, as the thematic focuses of the previously separate surveys were integrated. In the tradition of the Social Survey, the economic and social situation of students is analysed (Middendorff, 2022). This focus is supplemented by topics from the student survey (Multrus et al., 2017). In addition, for the first time the new study design enables comparisons between students with and without health impairments that make studying difficult (Steinkühler et al., 2023). Especially those coding tools with automatic assessment can lead to frustrations for learners, if they receive minimal feedback or if tasks are too complex. Therefore, it seemed reasonable to examine the effects of individual feedback types in greater detail in order to assess their impact in the context of programming education. Thus, the impact of informative feedback on learners was explored by means of thinking aloud experiments in order to obtain further clues for the design of feedback in basic programming education. Students’ steps during recursive problem solving of standard computer science problems (including the computation of the factorial of natural numbers, as well as the computation of the Fibonacci sequence) were recorded in a professional usability lab in form of both audio and video data (among them screencasts). A self-developed feedback prototype and the freely available online tool CodingBat were utilized for the investigation. The data on students’ steps includes their task processing time, interactions, feedback demands and use, so that the student steps in the problem solving process can be qualitatively traced. Thus, mental models, or student approaches towards recursive problem solving can become more transparent. The full transcripts of the thinking aloud experiments are too extensive, so they are not provided for reasons of data economy.
