The project invest... moreigated the challenges faced by refugee prospective students in preparing for university and the factors that influence whether preparation for university succeeds and a transition to higher education is completed. Data from the three sub studies (2x qualitative, 1x quantitative) were published in separate data packages. The present data package contains scientific transcripts of qualitative interviews with participants of study preparation courses of selected study colleges and universities in Germany. The interviews were oriented to the episodic interview method. 18 persons were interviewed, 11 of them twice. Topics of the interviews included the situation in study preparation, the study decision, and study entry. less

Motives, incentives and influencing factors for open science practices among open science award winners

In the course of the science policy agenda for the increased establishment of open science approaches in the last two decades, prizes and awards have also been developed and presented for this field of action. As part of a full survey of open science award... more winners in the German science system, qualitative in-depth interviews were conducted with this target group between September and December 2021, the transcripts of which are made available here for further scientific reuse. The transcribed data material was collected through episodic narrative interview forms supplemented by visual laddering techniques. For higher education research and science studies in especially, the data package offers methodological and content-related potential for further use. In this way, different questions of science and higher education research can be derived in depth in the context of central motive structures, incentive constellations and influencing factors for the anchoring of open science practices. Methodologically, the testing of the laddering interview technique for the first time in this subject area offers possibilities for reconstructing the motives and interests of higher education actors. In terms of content, corresponding award winners were interviewed for the first time for the object of study of open science practices, and a variety of questions about individual, institutional and technical factors in the context of the anchoring of open science practices can be newly applied to the data set. less

Group work in Learning Programming (GAPL)

The research project "Digital Programming in Teams" (DiP-iT) investigates how collaborative learning in computer science studies can be didactically developed and supported with digital tools. The project focuses on the use and implementation of learning a... morenalytics methods. The DiP-iT project aims to develop didactic and technical support in computer science studies for learning to program in teams. In order to achieve this goal, the sub-study "Gruppenarbeit beim Programmieren lernen" (GAPL; engl: Group work in Learning Programming) first took stock of the initial situation at the three locations of the joint universities (TU Bergakademie Freiberg, Otto-von-Guericke University Magdeburg and Humboldt University Berlin). Interviews with lecturers (data set 1) and students (data set 2) of the three participating universities were conducted to determine the initial situation. It was analyzed to what extent cooperative and collaborative methods are already used in teaching to learn programming. Subsequently, it can be deduced, among other things, how collaborative programming learning can be supported in the future (technically, didactically, organizationally, etc.), where unused potentials lie and which obstacles must be considered in an implementation. The lecturers hold basic courses on learning to program in computer science and were asked, for example, about the extent to which they use group work in their courses and what opportunities and risks they see in group work. The students of computer science have already participated in basic courses on learning to program in computer science or are participating in them in the semester of the interview. Among other things, they were asked about the extent to which they used group work in the course, how they experienced group work, and what opportunities and risks they see in group work. less

Recursive problem solving in the online learning environment CodingBat by computer science students

The data package has been gathered within the scope of the dissertation of the data provider, Natalie Kiesler. It focuses on informative feedback, its design, and its implementation in basic programming education. It was used to answer the research questio... moren about the effects of informative feedback offered by (online) self-learning tools. Especially those coding tools with automatic assessment can lead to frustrations for learners, if they receive minimal feedback or if tasks are too complex. Therefore, it seemed reasonable to examine the effects of individual feedback types in greater detail in order to assess their impact in the context of programming education. Thus, the impact of informative feedback on learners was explored by means of thinking aloud experiments in order to obtain further clues for the design of feedback in basic programming education. Students’ steps during recursive problem solving of standard computer science problems (including the computation of the factorial of natural numbers, as well as the computation of the Fibonacci sequence) were recorded in a professional usability lab in form of both audio and video data (among them screencasts). A self-developed feedback prototype and the freely available online tool CodingBat were utilized for the investigation. The data on students’ steps includes their task processing time, interactions, feedback demands and use, so that the student steps in the problem solving process can be qualitatively traced. Thus, mental models, or student approaches towards recursive problem solving can become more transparent. The full transcripts of the thinking aloud experiments are too extensive, so they are not provided for reasons of data economy. Instead, the transcripts of the students’ screen activities in terms of coding are made available. less
