Development and dissemination of research data management at Universities of Applied Sciences (EVER_FDM)

The survey was conducted as a standardized online survey that primarily covered three topics: Awareness, activities and needs regarding research data management. The sample included all Universities of Applied Sciences (UAS) in Germany (full coverage surve... morey) and the target groups were professors and research assistants at these institutions. Initially, one person from the presidential board/rectorate as well as one person responsible for research data management (RDM) at each UAS was identified and contacted by e-mail. These persons were asked to forward the questionnaire link to the research-conducting staff at their university. This way, 2,456 people from 109 UAS were recruited to participate in the survey. A pretest ensured the quality of the questionnaire. The preparation and analysis of the data was done syntax-based using Stata. less

The dataset contains a wide range of psychological, occupational, and demographic variables from individuals working in academic environments. It includes information on psychometric scales, characteristics of the working environment, and traits of leadership personnel. Collected data includes measures of work engagement, burnout, resilience, stress and anxiety, overall wellbeing, job predictability, role clarity, perceptions of workplace safety policies, job insecurity, job control, interpersonal conflict, work-family conflict, sense of community, illegitimate tasks, work-related stress, as well as emotional and instrumental support. Leadership aspects such as leader demands, lack of care, supervisor integrity, and overall job satisfaction were also assessed. Furthermore, several characteristics of the working environment were surveyed, including the country of the main workplace, contract duration, overtime hours, time allocation for teaching, research, fundraising, mentoring, and administrative tasks, number of research outputs, opportunities for personal development, intentions to leave academia, experiences or perceptions of harassment, and frequency of meetings with supervisors. less

DZHW Scientists Survey 2023

The DZHW Scientists Survey 2023 was conducted from January to March 2023. The respondents therefore take a retrospective look at their working and research conditions during the Covid-19 pandemic and their current post-pandemic situation. The previous Scientists Surveys took place in 2010, 2016 and 2019/2020. The DZHW Scientists Survey is designed as a multi-topic survey. Each survey consists of a core questionnaire with central questions, many of which have already been asked in one or more previous Scientists Surveys, as well as advanced modules with questions on focus topics. The core questionnaire contains the following thematic blocks: “Key data on scientific biography”, “Research and working conditions”, “Research funding”, “Publication behavior and knowledge transfer”, “Science policy topics and attitudes” and “Demography”. Within these thematic blocks, the topics “Continuing education courses in higher education didactics”, “Considerations on leaving academia” and “Research during the Corona pandemic” were included in the DZHW Scientists Survey 2023 for the first time. The focus topics in the advanced modules of the DZHW Scientists Survey 2023 were “Research Information/Digital Infrastructures/Informational Self-Determination”, “Digital Scholarly Communication”, “Science Mobility”, “Research Funding”, “Trust within Science”, “Tenure Track and Researcher Independence” as well as “Peer Review and Lotteries in Research Funding”. less

The aim of t... morehe joint project was to empirically reconstruct the change in higher education triggered by the switch to online teaching during the Covid 19 pandemic at both an individual and organisational level. The data package made available for re-use is based on the qualitative problem-centered interviews conducted as part of sub-project 3 ‘examining teaching’ at Paderborn University with professors who have developed and implemented innovative ideas in their teaching through interaction with digital technologies. The interviews were conducted between March and September 2023 and focused on the description of teaching concepts and planned future adjustments, the motivation for teaching commitment and any role models, questions about organisational support in the implementation of teaching concepts and ideas as well as challenges and solution strategies, the understanding of ‘good teaching’ and related changes in the context of the digitalisation of university teaching. Additionaly, the extent to which changes in society as a whole have an influence on the design of teaching and which changes to improve teaching should (or should not) be made in the coming years (at their university) from the interviewees' point of view were also discussed. In addition to the 18 interviews with professors from different career levels and disciplinary cultures, the data package includes the data and methods report, the guidelines used for the survey, the transcription guide and the data protection and consent form. less

Transfer of Insights from Higher Education and Science Research into University Management (TransForM)

The focus of the BMBF funded research project “Transfer of Insights from Higher Education and Science Research into University Management” (TransForM) revolves around the question to what extent insights from science and higher education research can suppo... morert university management tasks by means of a suited knowledge transfer and, thus, contribute to the professionalisation of this work environment. The term “university management” is broadly construed to include both the executive and middle levels. The data contains the results of a nationwide online survey of 1,432 managers of public universities from the fields of study and teaching, research, and transfer in Germany. The survey was conducted in autumn 2023. Among other things, the survey asked how relevant research findings from higher education and science studies are for university management activities and which transfer channels are particularly relevant. Three central transfer channels were covered: publications, conference input, and social media, with a total of ten analysed sub-channels. The results are complemented with questions pertaining to relevant research topics, cooperations with the field of higher education and research studies, and recommendations for improvement. less

As a rule, several survey waves are conducted at different times before and after the acquisition of the higher education entrance qualification for each year group of persons with a university entrance qualification. Accordingly, this is a combined cohort-panel design. The panel 2012 is the 19th cohort of the study series with currently three waves. The special topics chosen for the 2012 DZHW-Panel Study of School Leavers were information behaviour in choosing a post-school career, the social environment and cultural experience. less

Refugees on their Way into German Higher Education. Survey with refugees and other prospective international students (Quantitative sub study)

The project invest... moreigated the challenges faced by refugee prospective students in preparing for university and the factors that influence whether preparation for university succeeds and a transition to higher education is completed. Data from the three substudies (2x qualitative, 1x quantitative) were published in separate data packages. The present data package contains the data from the quantitative sub-study. Data were collected by means of questionnaires at selected preparatory colleges and universities in Germany. The study participants were invited to take part in two repeat surveys in online mode. Topics included study preparation learning, learning success, aspects of integration, and well-being. The data package includes the associated longitudinal data set. less

On the basis of an analysis of maximally contrasting cases (universities, disciplines), it was investigated how the change in the appointment procedure affects the relationship between the actors involved and their enactment of institutional logics. Eight ... moreuniversities and four universities of applied sciences with different profiles were selected for this purpose. The analysis focussed on the subjects of sociology/social sciences (universities and universities of applied sciences), mechanical engineering (universities and universities of applied sciences), physics (universities) and medicine (universities) in order to cover subject-specific differences (with regard to tasks, work processes, professorship equipment, disciplinary performance standards, etc.). A total of 76 guideline-based expert interviews were conducted with university management, deans, appointment committee chairs and equal opportunities officers from selected universities, 30 of which were prepared for the data package. The interviews focussed on the respective requirements, experiences with and assessments of appointment procedures. less
