STAIRCASE survey wave 1 

The survey targets researchers working in universities and non-university research organisations worldwide. A focus for survey dissemination was put on European countries. The survey targets researchers of the following career stages: R1 (first stage researcher), R2 (recognised researcher), R3 (established researcher), and R4 (leading researcher). Students and administrative or technical personnel were not included.

The survey was disseminated via mailing lists and social media channels. Researchers worldwide had the chance of answering it. However, dissemination efforts were concentrated on European countries. As study area we define the country of the main place of work (research institution) of the respondents. We only explicitly name study areas for which we have 24 or more responses. 156 responses come from countries with less than 24 responses. For these responses, the country of the place of work was censored to reduce the risk of re-identification of study participants. An additional 526 responses came from participants that chose to not disclose the country of their main place of work.
