Using Socratic AI to Support Research Question Development Among Pre-Service Biology Teachers

Details

Serial Number:
1
Population:

The sample comprised 65 pre-service teachers, of whom 36 were assigned to the Socratic Tutor condition and 29 to the non-socratic Tutor condition. Overall, 62% of participants were female, with comparable proportions in the Socratic Tutor (61%) and non-socratic Tutor (62%) conditions, p = .938. Participants had a mean age of 23.45 years (SD = 4.98); the mean age was 23.28 years (SD = 5.19) in the Socratic Tutor condition and 23.66 years (SD = 4.81) in the non-socratic Tutor condition, p = .762. Participants were, on average, in their 4.72nd semester (SD = 4.57), with similar values in the Socratic Tutor (M = 4.78, SD = 5.39) and non-socratic Tutor (M = 4.66, SD = 3.36) conditions, p = .911. A multivariate analysis of variance based on Pillai’s trace indicated no joint baseline differences between the conditions in gender, age, and number of semesters, p = .985.
