National Academics Panel Study (Nacaps) 2018

Nacaps, the National Academics Panel Study, is a new longitudinal study of doctoral candidates and doctorate holders in Germany funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). The project aims at providing nationwide cross-sectional and lo... morengitudinal data on doctoral candidates and doctorate holders in Germany regarding their study conditions as well as their career trajectories within and outside of academia. The Nacaps study series apply a panel design to multiple cohorts. Nacaps 2018 is the first cohort in this series of studies. In 2019, all doctoral candidates registered at 53 higher education institutions entitled to award PhDs/doctorates in Germany as off 01.12.2018 were invited to a first survey. Further panel waves follow at yearly intervals. Topics of the survey are e.g. the kind and structure of doctoral studies, motives for conducting doctoral studies, the mentoring situation, working and employment conditions, plans for career paths after the doctorate, international mobility, as well as individual characteristics of respondents. By covering these topics and by considering important indicators on young scholars, the Nacaps data provide important knowledge for national reporting (e.g. the federal report on young academics called “Bundesbericht wissenschaftlicher Nachwuchs”), for local steering, as well as for numerous further stakeholders. Moreover, the data offer an opportunity to investigate scientific research questions in the field of academic careers. less

The partial study investigated the compatibility of professional career and family life of young academics. The study focused on how conflicts of objectives between professional and private commitment can be managed as well as on the influence of the structures of the academic system on the careers of researchers. This dual perspective on structural and actor-specific characteristics made it possible to obtain information on success or failure to integrate both aspects of life, and to identify the relevant support opportunities. less

Digital Educational Practices of Students

The research project reconstructs students' practices in dealing with digital technologies and asks which digital practices exist for their studies. Digital practices are understood to be those in which the use of digital technologies is incorporated. This... more research focus is important because digital technologies have become part of students' everyday life. However, little is known about how digital technologies are actually used for studying - if they are used for studying at all - and whether digital practices have developed in the course of study. Although there are various studies on the ownership and use of digital media (Steffens, Schmitt & Aßmann 2018), they do not focus on actual digital practices. In Bourdieu's sense, digital practices are an expression of habitus, which is why it can be assumed that the appropriation of digital practices is linked to the capital and milieu of students. In this respect, the study examines the extent to which digital technologies could contribute to (new) social inequalities in the educational system. less

Studying in Corona Times

The survey "Studying in Corona Times" examines the various effects of the corona pandemic on students at German universities and takes a close look at the special features, challenges and opportunities of the largely digital summer semester 2020. The aim o... moref the study is to gain a comprehensive impression of the situation of students in Germany during this unusual semester. What challenges are the students facing? What is their employment and financial situation like? And to what extent is it possible to study successfully under the given circumstances? These and many other questions are the guiding principles of this study. In order to gain a realistic picture of the situation of students in Germany, around 28,600 students from 23 nationally selected state universities of different sizes, subject structures and regional locations are surveyed. The results of the survey are relevant to numerous measures in the fields of higher education, education and social policy and should enable research to examine various issues arising in the course of the corona pandemic. The study "Studying in Corona Times" is being carried out jointly with the University of Konstanz's Higher Education Research Working Group and the German National Association for Student Affairs. DZHW Scientists Survey 2019

The DZHW Scientists Survey 2019 is an online survey of full-time academic and artistic staff at German universities, colleges of education, theology, art and music, and medical schools. It is repeated at regular intervals as a trend study to explore the wo... morerking and research conditions at German universities and equivalent institutions of higher education. The first two surveys took place in 2010 and 2016. The 2019 Scientists Survey was conducted from November 2019 to February 2020. Accordingly, the COVID19 pandemic from March 2020 onwards did not yet have impact on the survey of scientists, who were consequently able to refer to their regular daily research routine. The DZHW science survey is designed as a multi-topic survey. Each survey contains a core instrument (a constant survey programme over several waves) with central questions on working and research conditions as well as modules with more in-depth questions on current research policy topics and research priorities. The core instrument is completed by priority topics for which the instruments are developed in cooperation with research groups within and outside the DZHW. The focus topics of the 2019 science survey were: open data, research information, authorship, knowledge transfer and subject cultures. less

Quantitative sub-study of the study "VORAUS"

The BMBF-funded study ‘Further development of established quality assurance: What are the precausions and consensuses of a partially randomized selection of research projects in the scientific field?‘ was conducted from April 2019 to March 2022. The study ... moreelaborates reservations and understandings in the scientific field about partial randomization and clarifies what is currently considered scientifically adequate. For this purpose, a quantitative survey was carried out with scientists in Lower Saxony in the fields of biology, chemistry, physics as well as in engineering and history. Questions were asked about assessments and attitudes towards the peer review process, research funding and the lottery procedure. In addition to socio-demographic and job-related information, also questions were asked about experiences in the peer review process and with research proposals. Then, in the qualitative sub-study, problem-centered interviews were conducted with scientists in different status groups. This data is also available as a data package (DOI). The data package of the quantitative sub-study contains a data set with 283 cases and 115 variables. less
