The DZHW Scientists Survey 2016 is an online survey for full-time academic and artistic personnel at German universities, teacher training colleges, theological colleges, art and music colleges as well as medical schools. As a trend study, the survey is re... morepeated periodically. It is a follow-up to the Scientists Survey 2010 which was carried out by the Institute for Research Information and Quality Assurance (iFQ). The iFQ merged with the DZHW in January 2016. Both the current and the last survey focus mainly on the research conditions of academics at German universities in regard to the changes of the German science system over the last 20 years. The survey contains questions on opinions on science politics, employment and career prospects of young academics, the peer review system, merit-based resource allocation, the acquisition of external funds and working time budgets. less

DZHW Panel Study of School Leavers 2008 - Educational paths of school leavers with a higher education entrance qualification

The DZHW Panel Study of School Leavers 2008 is part of the School Leavers panel series of the DZHW, which records information on post-school educational and career paths of school leavers with a higher education entrance qualification. For every graduate y... moreear (cohort) a series of survey waves are carried out with each wave occurring at a different time before and after graduation, implemented as a combined cohort-panel-design. The Panel Study of School Leavers 2008 comprises the 17th cohort of the survey series with three survey waves. In contrast to preceding cohorts, the study phase of the 2008 cohort is defined by the implementation of the two-cycle degree programme (bachelor’s and master’s degree). This change has been taken into account through a detailed recording of educational choices relevant for the course of study. The time shift in the survey implementation compared to previous cohorts made it possible to interview a higher proportion of students pursuing a master’s degree. The consequences of the decision of the Federal Supreme Court in 2005, which facilitated charging general tuition fees from the beginning of the first degree in seven federal states, could also be registered during the first survey wave of the 2008 cohort. less

The DZHW Graduate Panel 2005 is part of the DZHW Graduate Survey Series, which compiles information on study, career entry, career development and further qualifications of higher education graduates using standardised surveys. The first Graduate Panel was... more created in 1989. Since then, every fourth graduate year (cohort) has been surveyed. For each graduate cohort, a series of survey waves are carried out, with each wave occurring at differing time intervals following the completion of degree. The DZHW Graduate Panel 2005 comprises the fifth graduate cohort of the survey series. In contrast to preceding graduate cohorts, the study phase of the 2005 cohort is defined by the transformation of higher education through the Bologna Process. With respect to this academic structural reform, a significant number of Bachelor graduates were surveyed for the first time in addition to graduates of traditional courses of study. Only graduates of subjects with a large number of graduates were considered. In addition to the changing academic environment, the graduate cohort 2005 also faced different labour market conditions than previous cohorts, whereby the beginning of the economic and financial crisis in 2008 marks their career entry. less

The Social Survey is a cross-section... moreal study which is usually carried out every three years. Key components of the study include access to higher education, structural aspects of the course and progress of studies, the economic and social situation (financing of studies, living expenses, employment, housing conditions) as well as topics in the field of activity of the German National Association for Student Affairs and socio-demographic characteristics. Over the course of the structural reform of the Bologna Process, the proportion of students of “new” courses of study in the sample of the 20th Social Survey has further increased compared to the sample of the 19th Social Survey. The implementation of “G8” in several federal states between 2009 and 2012, which reduced the duration until high school graduation from nine to eight school years, as well as the nationwide suspension of compulsory military service in 2011 allowed for matriculation at a lower age. less

Key components of the study include access to higher education, structural aspects of the course and progress of studies, the economic and social situation (financing of studies, living expenses, employment, housing conditions) as well as topics in the field of activity of the German National Association for Student Affairs and socio-demographic characteristics.  Due to the structural reform of the Bologna Process being well-advanced when the study was conducted, it comprises a significant proportion of students of the “new” courses of study. As another characteristic of the 19th Social Survey, 60 percent of the surveyed students were studying at a higher education institution charging general tuition fees. less

The data from the 18th Social Survey provide a snapshot within the process of the Bologna reforms, which, for the students, was primarily associated with the introduction of a tiered study structure. At the same time, the legal conditions for the reintroduction of general tuition fees had been created in seven federal states ("Bundesländer"). A supplementary questionnaire for students with children was used to examine their particular life and study situation and, for the first time since 1991, to present it in a special report. less
