Qualitative sub-study 2: Interviews with employees in the preparation of studies

The project invest... moreigated the challenges faced by refugee prospective students in preparing for university and the factors that influence whether preparation for university succeeds and a transition to higher education is completed. Data from the three substudies (2x qualitative, 1x quantitative) were published in separate data packages. The present data package contains 13 scientific transcripts of expert interviews with study preparation staff at selected preparatory colleges and universities in Germany. The topics of the interviews included the experiences with study preparation for refugees in comparison to study preparation for other international study applicants. less

The present data package contains scientific transcripts of qualitative interviews with participants of study preparation courses of selected study colleges and universities in Germany. The interviews were oriented to the episodic interview method. 18 persons were interviewed, 11 of them twice. Topics of the interviews included the situation in study preparation, the study decision, and study entry. less

The partial study investigated the compatibility of professional career and family life of young academics. The study focused on how conflicts of objectives between professional and private commitment can be managed as well as on the influence of the structures of the academic system on the careers of researchers. This dual perspective on structural and actor-specific characteristics made it possible to obtain information on success or failure to integrate both aspects of life, and to identify the relevant support opportunities. less

Digital Educational Practices of Students

The research project reconstructs students' practices in dealing with digital technologies and asks which digital practices exist for their studies. Digital practices are understood to be those in which the use of digital technologies is incorporated. This... more research focus is important because digital technologies have become part of students' everyday life. However, little is known about how digital technologies are actually used for studying - if they are used for studying at all - and whether digital practices have developed in the course of study. Although there are various studies on the ownership and use of digital media (Steffens, Schmitt & Aßmann 2018), they do not focus on actual digital practices. In Bourdieu's sense, digital practices are an expression of habitus, which is why it can be assumed that the appropriation of digital practices is linked to the capital and milieu of students. In this respect, the study examines the extent to which digital technologies could contribute to (new) social inequalities in the educational system. less

Studying in Corona Times

The survey "Studying in Corona Times" examines the various effects of the corona pandemic on students at German universities and takes a close look at the special features, challenges and opportunities of the largely digital summer semester 2020. The aim o... moref the study is to gain a comprehensive impression of the situation of students in Germany during this unusual semester. What challenges are the students facing? What is their employment and financial situation like? And to what extent is it possible to study successfully under the given circumstances? These and many other questions are the guiding principles of this study. In order to gain a realistic picture of the situation of students in Germany, around 28,600 students from 23 nationally selected state universities of different sizes, subject structures and regional locations are surveyed. The results of the survey are relevant to numerous measures in the fields of higher education, education and social policy and should enable research to examine various issues arising in the course of the corona pandemic. The study "Studying in Corona Times" is being carried out jointly with the University of Konstanz's Higher Education Research Working Group and the German National Association for Student Affairs. The data package includes data from the core set of the 13th to 21st Social Survey (1991 - 2016). The five individual scientific use files available at the FDZ-DZHW were pooled in an complex data preparation process to form an integrated dataset, which now enables elaborate time series analysis procedures on the aspects covered. less

Group work in Learning Programming (GAPL)

The research project "Digital Programming in Teams" (DiP-iT) investigates how collaborative learning in computer science studies can be didactically developed and supported with digital tools. The project focuses on the use and implementation of learning a... morenalytics methods. The DiP-iT project aims to develop didactic and technical support in computer science studies for learning to program in teams. In order to achieve this goal, the sub-study "Gruppenarbeit beim Programmieren lernen" (GAPL; engl: Group work in Learning Programming) first took stock of the initial situation at the three locations of the joint universities (TU Bergakademie Freiberg, Otto-von-Guericke University Magdeburg and Humboldt University Berlin). Interviews with lecturers (data set 1) and students (data set 2) of the three participating universities were conducted to determine the initial situation. It was analyzed to what extent cooperative and collaborative methods are already used in teaching to learn programming. Subsequently, it can be deduced, among other things, how collaborative programming learning can be supported in the future (technically, didactically, organizationally, etc.), where unused potentials lie and which obstacles must be considered in an implementation. The lecturers hold basic courses on learning to program in computer science and were asked, for example, about the extent to which they use group work in their courses and what opportunities and risks they see in group work. The students of computer science have already participated in basic courses on learning to program in computer science or are participating in them in the semester of the interview. Among other things, they were asked about the extent to which they used group work in the course, how they experienced group work, and what opportunities and risks they see in group work. less
