The partial study investigated the compatibility of professional career and family life of young academics. The study focused on how conflicts of objectives between professional and private commitment can be managed as well as on the influence of the structures of the academic system on the careers of researchers. This dual perspective on structural and actor-specific characteristics made it possible to obtain information on success or failure to integrate both aspects of life, and to identify the relevant support opportunities. less

Performance Evaluation in Appointment Procedures – The Changing Tradition of Hiring Professors in Academia. Qualitative Inquiry of the DZHW Study LiBerTas

On the basis of an analysis of maximally contrasting cases (universities, disciplines), it was investigated how the change in the appointment procedure affects the relationship between the actors involved and their enactment of institutional logics. Eight ... moreuniversities and four universities of applied sciences with different profiles were selected for this purpose. The analysis focussed on the subjects of sociology/social sciences (universities and universities of applied sciences), mechanical engineering (universities and universities of applied sciences), physics (universities) and medicine (universities) in order to cover subject-specific differences (with regard to tasks, work processes, professorship equipment, disciplinary performance standards, etc.). A total of 76 guideline-based expert interviews were conducted with university management, deans, appointment committee chairs and equal opportunities officers from selected universities, 30 of which were prepared for the data package. The interviews focussed on the respective requirements, experiences with and assessments of appointment procedures. less

Interview Data of the DZHW Study BerBeo

The project Monotoring Appointment Procedures (BerBeo) is a research project funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and carried out by the German Centre for Higher Education Research and Science Studies GmbH (DZHW). The project ana... morelysed (procedural) quality assurance in appointment procedures for professors at German (state) universities through officers for appointment procedures. Officers for appointment procedures are defined as persons who are responsible for the procedural quality assurance of appointment procedures for professors and – depending on the implementation of their position – may also perform other tasks to support the decision-making process in appointment matters. The data package made available for secondary use is based on qualitative expert interviews conducted with officers for appointment procedures, chairs of appointment committees and members of university leadership. The interviews, which were conducted between November 2020 and November 2021, focus on the quality assurance of appointment procedures for professors at German universities. In addition to the establishment and implementation of the types of professorial and non-professorial officers for appointment procedures to assure the quality of the procedures, the underlying understanding of quality of the respective actors and the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on the running of the procedures were also discussed. Besides 10 interviews with officers for appointment procedures, 7 interviews with chairs of appointment committees and 7 interviews with members of university leaderships, the data package includes the interview guidelines, as well as the transcription guide, the cover letters used for field access, the data protection information and the declaration of consent to data protection. less

The project invest... moreigated the challenges faced by refugee prospective students in preparing for university and the factors that influence whether preparation for university succeeds and a transition to higher education is completed. Data from the three sub studies (2x qualitative, 1x quantitative) were published in separate data packages. The present data package contains 13 scientific transcripts of expert interviews with study preparation staff at selected preparatory colleges and universities in Germany. The topics of the interviews included the experiences with study preparation for refugees in comparison to study preparation for other international study applicants. less

Subsequently, surveys conducted at German universities investigated which organizational objectives and measures contribute to overcoming these hurdles. Based on the results, recommendations were derived on how to support the retention of international scientists in Germany and specifically how to increase the proportion of international professors at German universities. This data package consists of six expert interviews with members of university management and three group discussions with university administration staff. less

Qualitative sub study of the DEKiF Project

The project Determinants and Effects of Collaboration in homogeneous and heterogeneous Research Clusters (DEKiF) focuses on the potential of university and entrepreneurial collaboration in the form of linked resources, personalities, competencies, and exch... moreanged experiences as well as perspectives. Apart from these positive effects, the mixed methods study further highlights the increasing challenges that collaborating companies and universities have to face. The explorative case study of homogenous and heterogenous research cooperation investigated if the theoretical and previously elicted problems, solutions, and conditions are differentiated sufficiently or if other parameters have to be considered (case study 1). The advanced case study of heterogenous research clusters investigated cooperation between universities and companies in expert interviews as well as in focus group discussions (case study 2). Research clusters with large-scale companies and small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) were included. Apart from that, different sizes or degrees of network complexity were considered in choosing research clusters. The aim was to examine the specific structure of the cooperation problems in applied research clusters and the experience with solutions, especially in regard to the different phases of cooperation, more precisely. Additionally, the different expectations of the interviewees regarding the performance was examined, for example with regard to publications, patents, and the qualification of the scientific offspring. less

Digital Educational Practices of Students

Digital practices are understood to be those in which the use of digital technologies is incorporated. This... more research focus is important because digital technologies have become part of students' everyday life. However, little is known about how digital technologies are actually used for studying - if they are used for studying at all - and whether digital practices have developed in the course of study. Although there are various studies on the ownership and use of digital media (Steffens, Schmitt & Aßmann 2018), they do not focus on actual digital practices. In Bourdieu's sense, digital practices are an expression of habitus, which is why it can be assumed that the appropriation of digital practices is linked to the capital and milieu of students. In this respect, the study examines the extent to which digital technologies could contribute to (new) social inequalities in the educational system. less

Qualitative sub-study of the "VORAUS" project

The project "VORAUS: Further developing established quality assurance formats: Which VORreservations and consensuses does a partially randomised SELECTION of research projects encounter in the scientific field?" was funded by the BMBF from April 2019 to Ma... morerch 2022. The study investigated reservations and consensus in the scientific field regarding partial randomisation. On this basis, it was clarified what is currently considered appropriate in science. Prior to a quantitative survey on the topic, the data from which is also available as a data package (DOI: https://doi.org/10.21249/DZHW:vorausquanti:1.0.0), problem-centred interviews were conducted with scientists from different status groups in the qualitative sub-study. In a narrative part of the interviews, the interviewees were asked about their path into research. Questions were asked about their experiences with research funding, their attitudes towards ensuring scientific quality in research funding and the randomised selection of research proposals. The present data package comprises a total of 18 transcripts of six interviews each with professors, post-docs and doctoral students. less

Professionalization in theological conversations. A qualitative sub study of the projects PRONET & PRONET²

The data package consists of transcripts of Theological Conversations carried out classrooms, which were collected as part of the two large-scale projects of the Kassel teacher training program 'PRONET' (PROfessionalization through NETworking) and 'PRONET²... more', integrated into the "Quality Offensive Teacher Education", which is funded by the federal and state governments with funds from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. Within the two large-scale projects, the research data presented was collected more concrete within the framework of the sub study “Professionalization in Theological Conversations as the Basis for Cross-Phase Networking in Teacher Education” - the title of the first project within the PRONET framework - and “Networking of subject-specific science and subject-specific didactics in the Professionalization in Theological Discussions “- the title in the second project phase of PRONET. In Theological Conversations, the pupils and the teacher get into conversation about large and often existentially significant theological questions (Freudenberger-Lötz, 2007). The presented research data was qualitatively-empirically collected and consists of transcripts of Theological Conversations, which were led by students: integrated into two Kassel research workshops (Freudenberger-Lötz, 2013) and a research seminar, students led Theological Conversations about different theological content with pupils in different grades. less
